Proofpoint discovered four espionage-motivated threat actors using a new exploit kit named BlueMoon, which targets Chrome browser and Windows vulnerabilities. Initially associated with China-aligned groups, the exploit kit is expected to be adopted by other threat actors as patches are implemented.

  • Total number of detection methods: 6
  • Kill chain phase(s): command and control

PATCHCORD (Backdoor)

Acronis TRU discovered PATCHCORD backdoor targeting Afghan telecom providers and South Asian critical infrastructure. SHEETCORD was found in infrastructure, abusing Google Sheets for communication, distributed through fake VPN installers.

  • Total number of detection methods: 1
  • Kill chain phase(s): command and control
  • MITRE ATT&CK: T1071

Webshell Generic (Backdoor)

A webshell is a malicious script that acts as a backdoor on a compromised web server, granting attackers remote control. They exploit vulnerabilities to blend in with legitimate web traffic.

  • Total number of detection methods: 55
  • Kill chain phase(s): actions on objectives
  • MITRE ATT&CK: T1505
