Welcome to the weekly threat detection update report from Stamus Networks. Each week, you will receive this email with a summary of the updates.
Current Stamus Threat Intelligence (STI) release version: 1747
This week, in addition to daily ruleset and IOC updates, we provided Stamus Security Platform customers with the following improved defense(s):
Note: a "method" as referenced below, is a discrete detection vector for a given threat.
The following detections were added to your Stamus NDR this past week:
GemStone browser extension acts as an AI-powered browsing companion by Google Gemini while functioning as a browser surveillance and credential-theft backdoor, using malicious JavaScript service worker named background.js.
The following detections were updated this past week with changes to kill chain phase(s) or MITRE ATT&CK tactic(s)/technique(s):
ACR Stealer is a Malware-as-a-Service offered by threat actor SheldIO on Russian cybercrime forums since March 2024, possibly related to a previous private stealer program.
Atomic macOS Stealer targets various information on victim's machine, including keychain passwords, system info, and browser data. It can extract auto-fills, passwords, cookies, wallets, and credit card info.
APT-C-23 group uses Windows and Android components in operations. Android components were first described in 2017, and multiple analyses of their mobile malware were published in the same year.
RAT is a tool that enables remote user control over a system. Adversaries can use existing, modify, or create their own RATs for unauthorized access or malicious activities.
In April 2024, researchers found compromised sites leading to an iframe on pley[.]es showing an error message. The payload domain was taken offline, preventing infection. Later, the iframe was replaced with the ClearFake inject.
Cobalt Strike is a commercial penetration testing tool that simulates advanced threat actor attacks, covering the full range of ATT&CK tactics and integrating with tools like Metasploit and Mimikatz.
DarkSword is an exploit chain and infostealer in JavaScript that leverages multiple vulnerabilities on iOS devices to access and exfiltrate sensitive information, orchestrated through various malicious modules.
Emotet is a versatile malware used for downloading other malicious software, especially targeting the banking sector. It first appeared in 2014 and is often linked to TrickBot and IcedID.
Phishing involves pretending to be a trusted entity to steal personal information through fake websites or messages, often targeting users of social media, banks, and online platforms.
Fake update variants like SocGholish, Clear Fake, Smart Ape, and ClickFix are being tracked by a collaboration introducing the LandUpdate808 Fake Update Variant.
Lumma is a C-based information stealer sold on Russian underground forums and Telegram by LummaC since August 2022. It targets cryptocurrency wallets and has file grabber capabilities.
OnionDrop is a significant threat with a sophisticated evasion architecture that exceeds nation-state tooling. The focus on high-profile threats leaves a gap in addressing commoditized malware like OnionDrop.
Ransomware is a type of malware that blocks users from their system or files and demands ransom payment for access. Originally payment was sent via mail, now via cryptocurrency or credit card.
Gen believes this new malware is a 64-bit version of Lumma Stealer, capable of stealing various valuable information like browser passwords and cryptocurrency. It uses EtherHiding and includes anti-analysis checks.
Loaders are basic remote access Trojans allowing attackers to control compromised computers or bots. They are traditionally lightweight to avoid detection, but can evolve with added features for cybercriminals.
Malwarebytes found a new social engineering toolkit that uses compromised websites to perform advanced fingerprinting checks and deliver the NetSupport RAT payload.
Advanced persistent threats (APTs) are stealthy threat actors, often nation states or state-sponsored groups, who gain unauthorized access to networks for political or economic motivations, utilizing various tactics to remain undetected.
Dropper is a type of Trojan that installs malware on a system. It can hide the malware within itself or download it to the target machine once activated.
Sophisticated adversary with expertise and resources uses multiple attack vectors to establish presence in organizations' IT infrastructure, exfiltrate information, undermine missions, and persistently adapt to defenders.
Cyble research labs found a malware developer advertising a powerful Windows RAT on the dark web during a threat-hunting exercise.
The following threat detection(s) were improved this past week with new or updated threat methods.
